Welcome

St Luke’s, Church of England, Community Primary School

On behalf of everyone at St Luke’s I would like to warmly welcome you to our school. I am Martin Moriarty the Headteacher.

The school is in the heart of Tiptree with a reputation for being welcoming and caring.

Through our vision of know, love, serve; God, Ourselves and Others we celebrate the very many talents that individual children have, with the child placed at the heart of everything that we do – knowing, loving and serving all our children. Parents and staff build good relationships to ensure the children in our care thrive, and visitors to the school frequently comment on the family feel that the school has.

We believe that children learn best when they are enjoying what they are learning and feel happy and secure in their learning environment. The school curriculum is designed accordingly, and we pay great attention to the development of the whole child.

Firstly, there is a focus on the fundamental skills of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. These are begun with firm foundations established in the Early Years and developed through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 so that by the end of their time with us at St Luke’s the children join secondary school with a key grasp of these skills.

Secondly there is a commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum delivered through rich and engaging activities so that children strive to be the next generation of athletes, musicians, scientists, engineers, dancers and historians; inspired by their encounters with a wide range of subjects at St Luke’s.

Finally, we want pupils at St Luke’s to leave as positive citizens of the future, ready to know, love and serve others. Through opportunities to develop Learning Characteristics and Christian Values such as responsibility, resilience, reflection, co-operation and forgiveness, children are set up to be lifelong learners as they take the next steps to making a positive contribution to the world.

This approach is echoed through the school homework policy which focuses on a mix of practising the fundamentals and further developing their talents through enrichment homework which explores further topic related activity in a way that children will enjoy learning.

Extracurricular opportunities also mirror the curriculum with a good variety of clubs to help the fundamentals. Curriculum clubs such as art club, storytelling club, glee club and a range of sports clubs are on offer as well as extracurricular clubs that develop soft skills such as gardening club. These opportunities change annually, and we continue to aim to deliver a balance of experiences for every age group.

The school has a long commitment of care and community involvement based on an historic relationship with St Luke’s church and we seek to honour that tradition by supporting children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development. This is achieved through attending services, collective worship in school and links to the RE curriculum.

St Luke’s also works collaboratively with other local schools, as part of a 24 primary school consortium across Tiptree and Stanway and our local secondary school, Thurstable. Joint events such as sports tournaments and music festivals are well attended and create moments to be remembered for all the children and parents.

Children at St Luke’s are proud of their school. Pupils are given a voice through the dedicated and determined school council and they enjoy school. They work co-operatively and purposefully together and leave the school as confident individuals ready for the next stage in their learning journey.

Kindest regards,

Martin Moriarty
